Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Duke...opinions please!

In addition to what Duke said, I would wonder if the plywood with facing which is intended to block the sound wouldn't be reflecting a lot of acoustic (air movement) energy back into the membrane, which in turn could cause breakup and distortion. Unless you're going to disconnect the elements not open to the listener, I have my doubts it will work, but feel free to go ahead and try. Ever hear the 1+1? It was half the width of the 2+2 and one third the width of the 6. What you would be accomplishing with the 6 (which actually could have been called the 3+3) would be somewhat similar to what the 1+1 does along with some acoustic side baffling which would extend bass response by reducing dipole cancellation. The element Brian Cheney uses is pretty narrow, and no doubt the shape of the slot is designed carefully. The ribbon element is quite a bit different from an ESL panel, as is its radiation pattern.

I have a couple of friends in the area who are heavily into Acoustats, especially one who uses the Acoustat direct drive amps on his 2+2s, eliminating the step-up transformers. No way would I trade my speakers for his, but he gets the best sound possible. I'll put you in touch if you care to drop me a line.
