Re: KEF 104.2 Woofer repair

Is it the outer surround, or the one in the center around the dustcap? If the inner one, ignore it. If the outer one, you can't just replace one, you would need to have all 4 replaced. If one outer surround has rotted, most likely the other three are not far behind it anyway, but the real reason is that KEF computer-matched all four of those woofers at the factory. What that means is that all four of those woofers were measured to have as nearly identical response curves as possible.

If the guy in Chicago is that good, and he knows all four need to match when he's done, he can probably do it. Just make sure the surrounds used are as close to the same dimension in every measurement (not just outer diameter) as the originals as he can get. The width/height of the roll, the amount of foam on the cone, the thickness of the foam, and the density of the foam are all very important in something like this.

Also, I can't remember if the inside edge of the surround goes in front of, or behind, the outer edge of the cone. Do NOT change that, if the originals go behind the cone, get a new surround that also goes behind the cone.

It may also be worth calling KEF. I believe they rebuild and stockpile B200's for the 104/2 that have been traded in for replacements.

Good luck, and if you can't get them repaired, I know a LOVELY little spot here in the Atlanta area where they can live out their retirement in a caring, loving, environment . . .
