Duke...opinions please!

Hello, Duke, all...

I have been listening to Acoustat 6's for the last few months, and really like most of what they are doing, but the venetian blind effect is very much a part of listening to them, and is a real pain. For those of you unfamiliar with them, the Acoustat 6's are essentially a 3+3 panel dipole electrostat, about 28" wide and almost 8' tall.

What I was hoping to get your opinion on is this: what do you see as the downside of masking all but the center 1-2" of the center panel and all of the flanking panels for a (just as an example) 12" distance centered at listening ear height? By masking, I am referring to using an acoustically opaque device like a 1/2" piece of plywood faced with 1/2" of wool felt (felt towards the electrostatic element, of course) with a vertical slot over just the center of the center electrostatic panel.

What I am trying to achieve is a narrow line source at listening height which will, hopefully, have good horizontal dispersion and minimize the venetian blind effect. The rest of the 8' tall system would be left alone so as not to upset the direct/reverberant balance of the current set-up.

I should say that the "masking" idea is not original with me, but was inspired by what Brian Cheney is doing with his current line sources. My modification is that I only want to adjust horizontal dispersion over a limited vertical distance centered at seated ear height. IOW, I want to keep as much of the original dispersion characteristic and power response as I can.

Thanks in advance, Duke, and anyone else who takes the time to reply.

Best wishes,
David
