1) The crossover cap(s) likely need replacing. Remember these were built to a budget and hence the difference in a penny cost for a cap was important.

2) These speakers were floor standers and while many seem to put them on stands they need to be coupled to the floor. Most stands uncouple the speaker and shift the frequency response curves that may be leading partly to what you are hearing.

3) Also, placement is important and unlike modern mini-monitors that like to stand out in the room, these were designed to be closer to the back wall and placement is critical as to the side walls.

4) The sweet spot is important regarding the high end disppersion. Make sure you either have the speakers making the sweet spot where you sit or you have id'd the spot and are sitting at the distance and height.

The Advents do have some limitations but when working right and set up correctly, they can still knock off much of what is out there until you get into the more expensive units. Also, they are revealing of upstream component weakness, though not as revealing as say a Klipsch Heresy.
