I refoamed and modded a pair of the newer version of the larger Advent for a friend... the designs are pretty much the same except the newer woofer got rid of the masonite thingy and the newer cabinets had that rounded, art deco look. Maybe my experiences can help you with yours.

The 'fried egg' tweeter really isn't all that bad but I tamed some of it's hotness by coating it with a dillution of Alex Plus caulk and putting some polyester batting around it. After a lot of listening and a little measuring I found that most of strident character of this speaker wasn't tweeter related at all. It has some phase problems which are helped by tilting it back by about 5 degrees so that the tweeter lines up vertically with the woofer voice coil. The tilt does a lot to open up the sound and improve the staging.

The speaker absolutely DID NOT like being up on stands and sounded hot and horrible when taken off the floor. It needed to be on the floor so that the floor was reinforcing the bass. This makes sense because speakers of that era were expected to be put on the floor. I remember listening to the old Large Advent in a stereo store and they were always on the floor.

The crossover consisted of a capacitor on the tweeter which I replaced with a film type. I modeled the woofer and found that a zobel network would help the roll off so I put one on (can't remember the values of that but I used junk parts from my parts box). Each mod made an audible improvement and outside of the refoam, the total cost was less than $6. The result was an excellent sounding speaker with good imaging, wide, realistic soundstage, clean strong bass, excellent vocals. I was loathe to part with them and my friend was blown away when he came and listened to them before he took them from me. All I wanted from him was to reimburse me for the foam kit but he insisted on writing me a much bigger check because he didn't think he could buy anything better sounding for less than $1000. He says they are happily singing away with their fronts propped up on shot glasses.

Oh... and the 3 position tweeter switch.... I was going to take that thing right out but after modding the woofer the speakers sounded fine with the switches in the center positions so I just left it alone.
