I've been able to enjoy both Vandersteen 2's and Legacy Classics from only six feet away ... even though I expected poor driver blending and thought both owners were making a mistake placing their speakers so close BEFORE I sat down to listen.Near field 4 to 5 feet away works best with two way speakers especially when and the two drivers are also placed close together on the baffle.
