Re: Does a loudspeaker's time coherence matter ?

I think it all depends on what appeals to you and what you listen for.
Personally, I find myself drawn to speakers that have both time & phase coherence. One aspect of the listening experience that is very important to me is the sound staging, and my experience has shown this to be enhanced by coherence. I tend to key in on aspects of the presentations that friends of mine do not pay much attention to or may not be able to detect readily.

I also believe that a portion of what leads to different preferences in the listening experience is individual differences in the way we listen to music. Not all of us have the same listening acuity. Some are able to readily detect things that other either can't hear at all or don't consider them important, so even if they can detect them, tend not to pay any attention to them. For example, my spouse pays no attention to soundstaging whatsoever and is just as happy listening to music in a single channel over the way it was recorded. One of our vehicles had fade & balance controls that were easy to disturb. It always drove me nuts to get in and find that all sound was coming out of the front driver's side speaker, but my spouse was perfectly happy because the volume was increased by that setting. My spouse's hearing is fine - but soundstage or stereo was to them not important at all, when questioned about it the perceived experience was reported simply as "pressure differences at the ear, so what, it doesn't make it sound any different!"

My spouse may be an extreme case, but I also have a friend who has nearly 100K invested in his system (constantly tweaking & upgrading it) and soundstaging is probably at the bottom of his priority list. Frequency response, tonal purity, and clarity are at the top of his list. We have both spent considerable time listening to each others systems and do have different listening styles, although our musical tastes are very similar.

All of the above is a long winded way of saying that we all have different tastes and appreciation for music, so the only way you can tell if coherence (either time and/or phase) matters is by listening for yourself. You will find people on and off this forum that will argue passionately for and against, but in the end it is only your tastes and preferences that matter in your system.

Good luck and happy listening.
