I would agree that the Maggies need to be well out into the room although 5 feet should be fine. My experience, however, is that the Maggies can be more tolerant of close-to-sidewall placement than many box speakers because of the radiation pattern. I do agree with treating the first reflection points (true of any speaker) but I have heard setups that were as close as 18 - 24 inches from the side walls that still sounded good. It usually pays to experiment with room treatments behind the speaker as well.
