Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: How to Add Rear Tweeter to System?

1. I'd be inclined to cross over somewhere around where the front-firing tweeter starts beaming, which is quite high with a .75" dome (like 19 kHz). Also, consider using a second order filter; in my opinon that's more conducive to good power response.

2. I'd aim it straight back, as this best isolates it from the front-firing tweeter.

3. If your speakers are close to the wall, I'd say wide pattern. Otherwise I don't think it matters.

4. Phase doesn't matter. It will be reverberant sound, and your ear will have gotten any phase-related directional information from the front-firing tweeter.

5. The rear-firing tweeter will bring the system impedance down. Without measuring the final impedance curve and knowing what your amp can handle and how loud you like it, I couldn't say whether or not it will be a problem.

In my opinion, a speaker with a front-firing .75" dome tweeter isn't a real good candidate for adding on a rear-firing tweeter. Try it on for size before you cut holes in your speakers and ruin their resale value.
