I didn't see this addressed in a quick nut house search, so posed it here again. First, let me say that I would never stoop so low as to buy Bose [grin.] Actually, I did buy an original pair of 901's almost a year ago. They were in electronically good shape and sounded ok...but I didn't have a proper EQ, just the tone controls on my preamp. I decided to donate the speakers to a tin-eared friend in another state. He's happy with the set-up, but the amp & pre he's using are on loan (from me!). He does have a sony receiver that would be adequate to drive the 901s, but he'd need an EQ. So my question is: is the original EQ really required? They're available on ebay of course, but there are possible problems of reliability with a piece of electronics 30-40 years old. A second and probably much cheaper option would be a generic 10 or more band graphic EQ (sorry audiophiles, I know they give you fits too!). My tin-eared friend would then be happy, and could boost the bass and highs like any traditional eq-abuser would do. Only with the 901's, he'd have a legitimate reason to do so !!!Comments?
