Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Take a variety of your favorite music that you are very familiar with!

I had a fantastic in store demo with the VR4s. I brought in 4 CDs - Dresden Dolls - self titled, Laura Nyro - (a live disk), Patti Griffin - Red, and Drivin' & Cryin' - Fly Me Courageous. I was completely blown away by 3 of these disks but didn't get a chance to listen to the Patti Griffin disk because I ran out of time. I wanted to buy the speakers right then but was $700 short so while I gathered up the cash I decided to do a home demo.

What I discovered when I got these speakers home is though they did somethings better than the SP100s which I currently own they did some things worse. The Spendors IMO always made musical sense with my gear but using the VR4s in my system some recordings didn't make sense at all. I'm not sure of this but I believe I would have balked had I had a chance to hear the "Red" cd in the store.

The dealer and others say my system isn't "good enough" for the VR4s. I don't know how to respond to such "criticism". Let's see the system sounds like it's getting the music 100% of the time with the SP100s but only 80% of the time with the VR4s. Like believing the VR4s are "better" is going to convince me to dump the Spendors and hope other upgrades will allow me to get the musical satisfaction I get with the Spendors. Typical audiophile think?

Bottom line - if it sounds better 100% of the time it is better. Get a home demo if at all possible.

Give me rhythm or give me death!
