I hadn't considered stand mounted speakers only because I don't have the floor room for a subwoofer (plus I like the look of the floorstanding speaker). But if I can find a pair, such as you suggested, being placed close to room boundaries, I may not need a sub.
I'll start listening to and researching stand mounted speakers.
