Re: Speakers to replace B&W CDM7NT

Given your room size and placement considerations, I'm somewhat surprised that you do not want to consider standmounted speakers. There are many that work quite well in smallish rooms and in conjunction with a sub (assuming you need deep bass), you have a lot more flexibility with regard to placement that you would with a floor-stander - especially in your situation where you need to place the speakers close to room boundaries. This will often generate problems with bass response that can be averted using standmounts since you can put the sub wherever it works best. I recently went from floorstanding to stand-mounted speakers in a 14x18' room with wall placment restrictions similar to yours, and the benefits far out-weighed any disadvantages -- the improvement in soundstage and imaging alone was worth the change. I chose not to use a sub since the bass reinforcement provided by having the smaller speakers near the walls was more than sufficient for the type of music I prefer. If there is any "downside" to standmounts, it's that you need to invest in stands -- preferably ones that you can fill with sand or lead shot to eliminate resonances. The really good ones will set you back at least a few hundred $$. However the total cost of speakers plus stands may still be less or at least equivalent to that of a floorstander. Also if for some reason at a later date you want to upgrade or get a new speaker, its a lot easier to transport and ship a standmounted unit! As for recommendations, I personally have a pair of Merlin TSM-MXs which are extremely refined, very high quality speakers -- they replaced a pr of B&W N804s and I can tell you that the improvement in overall sound quality has been simply amazing. However, there are certainly a number of other excellent standmounted speakers you should consider besides Merlins -- I would stay away from almost anything from B&W except maybe the Signature 805s, which are very good...but not as good as Merlins and probably others. Good luck.
