Well the most important thing is obviously to just go out and listen and try and avoid the magazine hype. I would not rule out standmounts -- I liked my Audio Note J speakers for the non fatigue factor and that they could play real loud with very deep bass -- better than most floorstanders I had tried as a matter of fact. Plus i could shove them close to walls and preferrably in a corner for even better results. Of course they are also very large standmounts much bigger than the CDm 1NT for example.But ultimately there's more to a system than jsut a speaker and you should try several speakers with your gear to see if it's a good match.
You'll get a bazillion different suggestions and the magazines will no doubt love everything -- so really the easiest thing to do is spend several days at your dealers and listen to everything -- preferably side by side err one after the other in the same room.
You should also explore room acoustic treatments if it is an issue
