Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: PSB Century 500i

Great speakers, especially for the price! I used to run two pair of these, one pair driven by my vintage Eico HF-87 35wpc tube amp, and the other pair run by an HK AVR500 surround receiver for home theatre along with the Century 100 center channel.

These are a very natural sounding speaker with great bass extension and smooth/polite highs. If I remember correctly the manual stated the port on these was tuned for a two foot speaker distance from the rear wall, any closer and bass will be boomy muddying up the midrange. If you need to run them closer to the wall, stuffing the port helps. Also, they really can't put out extremely loud volumes without the midrange suffering. They are fine at normal listening levels or just above that range. If you like it loud, run them with a subwoofer, which takes the low end load off the 500i's.

BTW, if I didn't have such a large space to fill, I would still be running these, my boss just decided he needed them worse than I did, lol. Have fun with those!
