Mr. BS:The field really narrows when you take into account your budget, size and preference constraints. My choice would have been the Dynaudio Audience 70/72, but I suspect your amps aren't quite up to the load.
Like you, I was fed up with harsh upper-mids/low treble in the speakers I was using. I found the Audience 70 to be detailed, non-fatigueing and excellent for pop/rock-based material. When I auditioned them a couple of years ago, I listened to some Dave Matthews, David Byrne and Junkhouse, amongst others. At the same time I checked out the Mission 783s (small footprint floorstander; on your list of bad-speakers) and was impressed with them also, but they were a little edgier than the Dynaudios and sounded a bit compressed when pushed.
All that said, I'm also an Axiom fan. I've owned a variety of models from the early 90s to my 2-year-old M22s. They really are a good speaker, especially paired with my little ASL 8W monos (takes the edge off). I do realize they aren't for you though.
Luck,
Ben
