Re: Q: Equally revealing alternative to Wilson?

I've never seen, much less heard, the Watt/Puppies in any version so i can't speak from personal experience.

As far as a 2-way, response 37-27000 +/- 3 dB goes, and a lot cheaper than the Wilsons, there's Dynaudio's Contour 1.3 SE which I own and love. In the Ken Kessler review in the link below, he says it has a sense of scale that's hard to better for less than the 2000 vintage Watt/Puppies and comments favourably on it's detail and resolution. I figured it's worth a mention given Kessler's use of the Wilsons as a comparison in one area, though I'm not certain how realistic that comparison is.

There are also now the Dyn Special 25s which are slightly larger and the Contour 1.4 in a similar size range. The 25s are dearer than the 1.3 SE, go a bit lower and up the general sound quality. The 1.4 is cheaper, doesn't go quite as low according to the specs, but there seem to be some comments around that it sounds better than the 1.3 SE. I haven't heard it so no comment there. I haven't heard the Special 25 in a situation where I could do any critical listening but I do think it is better than the 1.3 SE. All 3 are dynamics and should give you the sweet spot size you want.

There have to be a lot of candidates out there. Your problem is going to be getting a reasonable size list to audition. Either you won't hear of enough or you'll be told of too many, but there have to be a lot of candidates and it really is going to depend on what the Wilsons offer that you're prepared to give up as the price drops because you'll have to give up something.
