Re: Ls3/5a,woofer not balance ,what to do ? Here's a solution..

Hello Zomperello,

I recall that you recently bought these speakers from Ebay. If you mean that the B110 SP1003 woofer sounds like it is off center and scraping the voice coil, then the spider suspension has relaxed somewhat (this is common).

One way to deal with this is to carefully pull off the front grille (use your fingernails or a very thin plastic card or plastic paint scaper so as not to damage the cabinet - do not use a screwdriver). Before you disassemble the speaker, check the woofer by pushing them in slowly about 1/4 inch. Then see how long it takes them to come out. If they return quickly (under 1 second) then the seal on the baffle will need replacing. If they come back slowly (about 2-3 seconds) then the seal is good and may not need replacing). (See the "box test" at www.ls35a.com). Then unscrew the 8 baffle screws that hold the mounting baffle in. With the speaker on its back, hold the baffle by the woofer cutout without touching the woofer surround and slowly but firmly pull the baffle out. Don't pull too hard because the wires that connect the cabinet to the crossover are not long.

If it will not come out, carefully turn the speaker so that the baffle faces down and, with fingers holding the baffle from quickly falling out, tap the cabinet edge downward so that the baffle will come loose (you might ask another person to help with this or do it into your lap).

Once you get the baffle out, set the speaker cabinet on its side and rest the baffle on its side too. You can then use a screwdriver and pliers/wrench/socket to remove the nuts and bolts holding the B110 woofer. Some of the bolts have a reverse thread so be careful here. Remember the original orientation of the woofer (which part was top and bottom (you might even mark it on the magnet). Once you have removed the bolts, the woofer will come free. Rotate the woofer 180 degrees and then refasten to the baffle. Remember to use the gasket seal that is on the edge of the woofer frame. This should allow the driver to work as gravity will pull the sag back into line. Then carefully reassemble the baffle. If the foam seal for the baffle is flattened or the speaker failed the box test, you should replace it with thin foam draft sealing insulation (usually about 1/4 inch wide, self adhesive and available at hardware stores like home depot in the US). Once you have the baffle back in, you should again use the box test to see how the seal is. You should play some light music for 1 or 2 days to test the speaker for improvement before using loud or bassy music. Be sure the voice coil is not scraping before doing any long term testing.

Another way to do this is just to turn the whole speaker over and play it that way for a week or so but the fix isn't always long lasting when you put them back upright.

If this doesn't work, give us a better description of the problem. Otherwise, the driver may need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Also try posting to the LS3/5a newsgroup at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ls35a/ to get other opinions.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bart
