Dixie Dregs DVD, live at Montreux, 1978

Man, I just picked up this DVD of the Dixie Dregs at Montreux in 1978 for only $10. I'm pleasantly shocked at how good it is.

I've been a fan of the DD for a long time, and the lineup at this show is one of my favorites: Steve Morse (guitar), Andy West (bass), Allen Sloan (violin), Mark Parrish (keyboards) and of course, Rod Morgenstein on drums. Stellar lineup. Andy West has his own tone and style on the bass, and that's one of the things I miss about the latter incarnations of the band. Plus, he was a natural at introducing the songs and his stage patter warms things up a bit.

The camera angles are clunky at times, and Morse's face is hardly ever seen. The songs are violin-heavy (a good thing!), and Sloan pulls this off with aplomb, looking as though he's having the best time of his life the whole while. The band is tight, and after the audience begins to warm up to this different type of music, they start to go nuts.

The sound is good. Bonus footage is them lip-synching (!?) two songs on the Dick Clark show, Crank It Up (w/ Alex Litgerwood on vocals) and Bloodsucking Leeches, and a bass-heavy rendition of Punk Sandwich from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.

If you're a DD fan, this is well worth picking up.
