Why is Bowie's Tin Machine period so maligned?

I recently pulled both TM albums out for a spin—the first time in a long time—and was pretty surprised that I liked them both quite a bit. To my ears, the music is better than most of what Bowie put out in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Reeves Gabrels was/is a pretty formidable guitarist, and the rhythm section of the Sales brothers was very good as well. I’m not sure why the band was so vehemently criticized, but IMO the music has aged pretty well, and was even a few years ahead of its time. Maybe time will be kinder to them than were the press and fans when they were around.
