Why is Bowie's Tin Machine period so maligned?

I recently pulled both TM albums out for a spinâ€”the first time in a long timeâ€”and was pretty surprised that I liked them both quite a bit. To my ears, the music is better than most of what Bowie put out in the â€˜80s and â€˜90s. Reeves Gabrels was/is a pretty formidable guitarist, and the rhythm section of the Sales brothers was very good as well. Iâ€™m not sure why the band was so vehemently criticized, but IMO the music has aged pretty well, and was even a few years ahead of its time. Maybe time will be kinder to them than were the press and fans when they were around.
