Even worse with Glastonbury festival in the UK. This year it will be 170,000 people which is way too many. Over 400,000 pre-registered just for the chance to buy a ticket (ebay tout avoidance measures introduced this year). When I started going in the mid-90's, there was no difficulty in buying a ticket, things seemed to change around the millenium time and now it is horrendously over-subscribed with the quality of bands dropping year on year. I haven't bothered with it since 2002, it's just a money-making machine.
