The Cult of the Individual Musician

That's a phrase that a fellow named Darius came up with some years back to describe this sort of thing. If someone's into it? I don't have a problem with it, I'm not looking to put anyone down or insult or anything like that. If ya like it, ya like it, fine, whatever. I will say that I do understand what it's like to know that there are some who will scorn you on the basis of something like musical taste, and I've been there, too. But that was in high school, and it gets a bit silly. People still do it, though. Whatever. As I mentioned above, I would normally stay out of a thread like this where what's going on just isn't my thing, but I thought the post I responded to deserved a re-stating of points I've made before expressing stances I've long held. And I've long thought that instrumental ability is an aspect of rock music that's given way more significance than it should, at least relative to songwriting. There are guys who can play like that all night long, and that's great, if that's what you're into. But what to my ears works for jazz doesn't necessarily work for rock...which isn't jazz.

Someone likes jazz-rock? Those guys could sure play, and I respect the idea of trying to stretch boundaries, particularly guys like Miles Davis who were always eager to do something new, different, experimental, whatever. But it's far from songs, which is what I connect with, and in a far different way from the jazz that preceded it, which I also connect with, in a different way, with a lot of what I do listen to being bop reworkings of standards anyway. But then there's rock, and some folks like bass solos, guitar hero worship, and the security that they somehow know that Eddie Van Halen is 'better' than Hendrix was (nonsense, sez I, but there are some who do think this).

Me, I like melody, hooks, middle 8s, vocal harmonies, and the sorts of emotions that these elements are more conducive to producing than virtuosity in a rock idiom. I tend to like ideas that are expressed in a relatively short period of time & border on being repetitive without going overboard in that regard.

But that's me, and it's not like there aren't millions of exceptions to that sort of template that I also dig. And here I am spelling out everything that I don't like about what's in this thread, but there's really no reason for anyone who disagrees to take insult or even take me seriously.

The reason I'm adding another post, though, is because I did want to think you for yr kind remarks below. And I'll mention something I rarely do on this board, I'm a bass player also, but I never do see the point in getting into that because it has little value on this board. I'm here as a fan. But this board covers a topic I'm pretty passionate about, and it's something I've been involved with in various capacities for many years. I have written professionally from time to time about music, but, again, that's not a credential that will give any points any more validity, either they make sense or they don't. Still, it's nice to see compliments. There are many people who write well, some quite eloquent at expressing themselves, and often in ways that I do consider way beyond my own capabilities. I just choose to take expressing a point seriously enough to spend the time to put words together in a fashion that's up to my own personal standards.

I'd keep a blog, but I decided a couple of years ago that everyone already was, and it seemed like a rat race I just wasn't interested in being a part of. I enjoy the discussions on this and other boards, and I learn a lot about music, and sometimes people have said they've learned from me, too. I could probably do more professionally, but I like freewriting & not having to worry about deadlines & editors & the expectations one is supposed to bear in mind when it comes to the reader. This board is one outlet for my thoughts on music, and, believe me, the thoughts of others who write better & know more than I do.

Unfortunately, some of the most stimulating discussion is also some of the most pointless: rock fans who are anti-rap, punk vs. prog, the significance of 'best-of' lists that nobody, of course, ever agrees on. But there's something about arguments that lead to some of the best points, for what it's worth. I've made plenty of enemies here, which is fine. Nobody has to agree with me.

Stick around, it's a good place. Sorry to hijack the thread.
