Viacom vs. Youtube

Hello all,
You have probably all seen or heard about the latest lawsuit of Viacom vs. Youtube (copyright infringement). My posting concerns only the music part (MTV and VH-1). The Comedy Central part is for others to argue.

I don't understand Viacom's stance. They have spent millions to produce videos that aren't shown on any channel much. Millions are spent to produce albums/cds that are by artists that are unknown to most people; This isn't the '70's where everybody knew Elton John, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, and E.L.O..

Instead of suing for copyright infringement, I'm surprised they don't pay people to upload the videos. If I just recorded an album/cd, I'd want to get it into homes by whatever means I could, hoping for familiarity and (hopefully) sales.

What do you all think?

Good listening,
David
