Personally, I don't think his lyrics are weak, especially compared to the tripe that more popular singers like John Mayer or James Blount put out.Here's one clue as to why Sweet's not popular: One of his best songs his called "Sick of Myself". Ain't the same sentiment as "You're Beautiful" and "Your Body Is A Wonderland". Excuse me now while I throw up on my keyboard.
