Re: Would anyone argue we're in a Golden Age?

Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Wilco, Whire Stripes, Cat Power, Hamell on Trial, Decemberists, Howe Gelb, Vic Chesnutt, Gillian Welch, Spoon, M. Ward, Silver Jews, Stephen Malkmus, Sufjan Stevens, The Hold Steady, Kings of Leon, Destroyer, Neko Case, Flaming Lips, Eels, Okkervil River, Mendoza Line, Fiery Furnaces, New Pornographers, Mountain Goats, Silver Jews.

All artists that have produced records in the last year or two. All artists that either have, or are beginning to produce a body of work that is about musical exploration and growth. All artists that make bloody great music - ranging from straight rock to alt country to folk to whatever you want. Not many get airplay. Most music on commercial radio is terrible - but this, I believe has always been the case. (Anyone remember the 80s fondly - yet Elvis Costello, the Mekons, Sonic Youth et al were producing their best music.) There is a veritable plethora of great music out there, and a device known as the "internet" is bringing it to you (information - wise, that is - I pay for music that I care about) And I'm loving it. Many of the bands mentioned will never find commercial success, but they are putting out damn fine music 'cos they want to. Most commercial music is about money and airplay. Do these people have any talent, or indeed, emotion? Not from what I have heard.

Arcade Fire - "Neon Bible" got it today and it rocks. I can't say that I feel that way about any commercial pop artists.

The music is out there, and there is a lot - I dare say more great bands than there were 20 years ago. It is harder to find.

But that is half the fun.

Sorry - I am inclined to rant. And that was a rant. Time to listen to "Music from Big Pink." Good music is good music - from whichever era.
