The Club is Getting Bigger.....

"I don't feel all musical eras are equally talent-laden and, from listening intently to lots of new stuff, I think it's falling off both in quality and quantity compared to past years."

I personally think this has been the case since 1985. It became apparent in 1990. And as this decline continues, more and more people are going to realize it.....

"Yes, there are many, many bands and performers with 'good' songs but, like those of five years ago, they'll be forgotten by next year, too."

Songs and bands are now crafted to sound the same as others. The lack of unique character in music, combined with composition (not necessarily originality), stifles such qualification.

"I can just see guys responding with hundreds of bands and artists I haven't heard of and pretty much no one else has, either. Why? Because they appeal to a teenie segment of listeners unlike, say, a Santana, Sex Pistols, or... Galaxie 500."

This was always the case with rock. Except at one time, the music wasn't limited to where it appealed *only* to the teenie segment. Music overall has become more and more culturally targeted than ever before. Mainly because it's glorified by the media, but also because the lack of musical exposure and training has forced artists to channel their strong points toward what they socially relate to.

"The medium seems to be close to exhaustion. When one hears a new band, for instance, notice how it's easy to say, 'Hmmm, sounds like a Crazy Horse/VU/Lucinda Williams mix (I know, no one could)."

My problem is that technology has enabled under-talented and under-achieving artists to put out products that appeal to an audience that's more concerned with generation or culture than music. It makes big news, the artists get fame. But when people grow up, they look back, and sometimes wonder what was so appealing. They come to the realization that it was more social acceptance and idol worship than actual like of the music.

I personally realized this in my teen years. Most people realize this afterwards. Some in their 20s, others in their 50s. And some never realize it. I do think part of it may be whether and to what degree people develop an appreciation of music as music, with no social or generational strings attached.
