THE 49TH GRAMMY AWARDS
Mary J. Blige, Dixie Chicks triumph at a Grammys
Once again stuck in a time warpAidin Vaziri, Chronicle Pop Music Critic
The Police reunited. Mary J. Blige cried. The Dixie Chicks triumphed. But what the 49th annual Grammy Awards really needed on Sunday was a good flash of Britney. Really, was there a bigger pop sensation in all of last year? If there was, it certainly couldn't be found in the list of winners or performers at Los Angeles' Staples Center, each one reconfirming the idea that the Grammys are hopelessly stuck in the era of headbands, Pong and unironic mustaches. In the very first broadcast prize of the night, industry warhorses Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder upset actual contemporary hitmakers like Nelly Furtado and Shakira in best pop collaboration with vocals for a lounge remake of Wonder's 1968 hit, "For Once in My Life."
The heart of the show, meanwhile, was consumed by an extended tribute to the Eagles followed by an even more bloated but no less pointless homage to R&B in general, featuring an off-key android in lace resembling Smokey Robinson and, well, Lionel Richie, wringing out songs that were recorded decades ago and have been pummeled into submission by late-night infomercials ever since. If it wasn't for Christina Aguilera's commanding take on James Brown's "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World," you would be forgiven for thinking you were watching a flashback clip.
