I'm not that big on music defining itself on that basis, but...there's been some stuff lately that I think has been pretty good. Sometimes it strains & I don't think that benefits the music, but it's a passionate topic (that I think is best left to Outside) from which some decent toons do spring. The Green Day album American Idiot isn't anti-war per se, but it does have its moments, and it definitely comes through in the videos, some of them, anyway. This is a band that I always liked but thought they just had some good & some great single tracks, along with a lot of filler, and no truly great albums. This one is a great, and I rate it on a level with London Calling & Quadrophenia.
The Neil Young album Living With War & also Steve Earle's The Revolution Is Here both have some very good toons, but I can't say they're great albums. I only listened to Living With War a couple of times & therefore can't offer specifics, but on the Earle record, there's a song about Condoleeza Rice that positive makes me cringe. The rest of the record is mostly pretty decent, with some great stuff, actually. A shame.
The Bruce Springsteen rec from this past year with the Pete Seeger covers isn't anti-war, but, given who wrote the tunes, there's an element that comes through, I think. And while I haven't heard much he's done lately, I would think Billy Bragg has probably had a thing or two to say about what's going on.
There's some political hip-hop as well, but I can't really give specifics. Since most rap has succumbed to what have become industry standards on the presentation & overall thrust of the music, I just haven't heard much in a long time that's done much for me. There may be a Public Enemy out there today, but I don't know. Same for punk; the stuff I've heard that I've liked the most has been fairly apolitical, and it's safe to say there are no bands out there that approach the Minutemen.
The guys I dig on most these days--Nick Cave, Beck, Tom Waits--just aren't much in the way of 'anti-war' kinda stuff, for the most part. Same for Dylan. I'm actually a little surprised Neil Young put out a record like that at this point. But, you never know with him. Greendale was great, though, I thought.
