I just saw the Tea Party in an outdoor concert a month ago and
I must say that you won't be disappointed by the quality of this Canadian band's seven+ CDs they have recorded since the early 90s.
Also, experienced live - they are truly exceptional.
What makes them stand out from the other shlock out there is quality
song craft, and an emphasis on integrating unique Indian and Mid-eastern instruments with the basic power trio format.
However, these guys are no mere Kashmir-copy-cats.
Sure, the Zeppelin influence is there, especially in their early music, but they continued to evolve and embrace change. Their first
CD "Splendor Solis" boasts strong songs and musicianship balancing
hard rock with celtic influenced acoustic guitar, and also features
one bluesy track.
Their second -"The Edges of Twilight" -is their most Zepplenesque
and is heavy on exotic mid-eastern instruments - some never before used on a rock recording - 'Sister Awake' has an amazing swirl of exotic sounds and still manages to rock.
The follow-up CD "Transmission" takes a turn in the direction of
Techno - closer to Nine-Inch Nail's territory - but without sacrificing strong songwriting. The next CD, "Triptych" is a melting
pot of all that came before with a couple of potential hit singles
thrown in for good measure, followed by the "Interzone Mantras"
which scales back the instrumentation/production slightly to emphasize Jeff Martin's electric guitar.
Their latest 'Seven Circles" is their most commercial effort with
two strong singles ("Writings On The Wall" & "Stargazer) receiving
substantial play on FM Radio here in Canada (and probably in Australia too where they are apparently very popular)
So, if I sound like a freakin propaganda machine its because This
band stands out in a truly over-crowded playing field. Yes, the vocals sound eerily like the ghost of Jim Morrison and some of those
power cords could been lifted from The J.Page riffbook, but there is
a whole other dimension to this band if you're willing to dig a little deeper. And any 'greatest hits' don't do justice -they're
an album band. Highly recommended and catch them live if you have
the opportunity. They're an amazing trio.
