I think that often the best bass players are those who have played on many great songs. Usually (to me) this means that they don't overplay and draw a lot of attention to themselves and/or distract the listener from the song. "Busy" bass playing usually only works well in power trios (or power trios with vocals.) With that in mind, I tend to favor bassists who make solid but subtle contributions to the songs.Donald Duck Dunn (r&b)
