35 years ago, when taking a break from finals at UC Santa Cruz, I'd read the June 1990 Stereophile. I was also listening to Forbidden's "R.I.P." Two of my coed dormmies also wanted to take a break, and they suggested hitting the beaches.
They asked what I was going to do for the summer. I told them that I was going to spend the summer, not at my regular home in San Francisco, but at my secondary home in Honolulu. For one of the coeds, that inspired her to grab her board.
Th other coed, who was from L.A., said that she was going to take her sweet time, going home. She said she was going to take Highway 1, and go through Big Sur.
Then she was going to stay in or near San Simeon, and visit Hearst Castle.
I said that, if you took Highway 1 north from Santa Cruz, you'd hit Pacifica, Daly City, and San Francisco, where Death Angel were from. On Forbidden's "R.I.P.," Death Angel were the backing vocalists.
The song's title and riffs made the first girl think of "rip curl." While the second girl and I were lounging on Cowell's Beach, the other got to ride some waves. Audiophiles may or may not be able to catch waves, but they should catch Forbidden's textbook thrash, "R.I.P."
