Tears For Fears, "Swords And Knives"

Tears For Fears' Beatle-esque "Sowing The Seeds Of Love" got the 1989-90 school year off to a good start.

And then, 35 years ago, late in the Spring 1990 quarter, I went with several dormmies to a Santa Cruz beach. In no mood to study or do homework, we chilled to TFF's "Swords And Knives." The way it built up and then reverted mimicked the breath of water and shore.

When we got back to the dorms, "Swords And Knives" inspired someone, to cut up cardboard boxes, and use them as "armor." With same cardboard, we made swords. Everyone took turns hitting the guy in the cardboard "armor."

As much as we liked "Swords And Knives," we understood that it was just too progressive, to make any inroads on the pop charts. By the same token, that makes "Swords And Knives" a prime audiophile favorite.
