30 years ago, we started seeing the eponymous Company B on CD. But, hardly anyone had a CD player back then. And besides, you generally did not buy dance music. If you did, you bought it on 12" vinyl single, not CD, LP, or cassette. Indeed, I saw several classmates with various edits and mixes of this killer dance tune.

At dances, most kids were wallflowers. "Fascinated" was one of the few songs, which had the power to bring ALL students onto the dance floor, even if that meant the edges, not the middle. It was such a feel-good song, it didn't matter if you were girl or boy, freshman or senior, Asian or Hispanic, nerd or jock, solo or in a group. How could you not like a song, which drew you into a trio of your female friends/classmates, as they grooved, shook side-to-side, looked and pointed at you, and sang teh chorus: "'Cause I, I'm fascinated by your love, boy; And I'm fascinated by your love toy; I'm fascinated by the way you make me feel"?

When we eventually did get "Fascinated" on CD, we learned that it was an excellent production. But back to the vinyl singles. In the mid-90s, as we delved into high-end audio, we found that "Fascinated" did not sound best on the kilobuck decks with fancy carts. Rather, it often got audiophiles to get up and groove, when used with a Sumiko Blue Point Special on either a Rega Planar 3 or SOTA Comet.

Freestyle gems, such as Company B's "Fascinated," are why some of my followers argue that 1987 was pop music's best. Well, as they commemorate "Fascinated's" 30th anniversary, do note that more and more audio stores and shows are playing it. They are finally picking up on the fact that this is what, for 30 years now, audiophiles have always wanted to hear.
