Tears For Fears, "Head Over Heels"

"Funny how time flies"

Another audiophile was talking to me about 1985: "I was already in my 30s, when I bought" Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair. "When I heard funny how time flies at the end of 'Head Over Heels,' I was already in agreement. My kids were in grade school, and I had less and less time to go to shopping for myself, including record stores. So I would use my Columbia House subscription, and order cassettes which were already at least a year old. And yep, when they said to wait 6 to 8 weeks, they meant it. But anyway, Songs From The Big Chair was one I actually bought from a record store."

In a separate email, he composed, "Most audiophiles I know are my age. So yeah, we're twice as old as were in '85, when I bought the album."

The bizarre video for "Head Over Heels" placed the band in a Toronto library, included a chimpanzee wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey, and ended up with lead singer Roland Orzabal and the librarian as an elderly couple.

Songs From The Big Chair is available in a wide number of physical media. The original Mercury/Phonogram CD sounds harsh and thin. The cassette and LP sound better. If you like the thinner sound, but wish it were cleaner, try the SHM-CD.

In other conversations, the audiophile voiced his disappointment at Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs' gold CDs. He has purchased different titles than I, but he said that most exhibited slow, muddy, lifeless sound. The lone exception is Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair, arguably one of MFSL's best-balanced. In addition, the Extended Remixes of "Shout" and "Everybody Rules The World" are excellent.

Some of you have recommended the 30th anniversary Super Deluxe package, which includes 4 CDs and 2 DVDs. As I have not heard/seen this, I am not at liberty to comment.
