During the Spring '87 semester, the Cutting Crew's "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" was a smash hit. And it's still a radio staple. But unfortunately, the popularity of this song made people overlook just how strong its album, Broadcast was.Sporting top-notch sonics, Broadcast was a favorite of my classmates in the Creative Writing class I took, that summer at Punahou. So inspired, I went to the Tower Records, then located near Kapiolani & Keeaumoku. But my brother beat me to the Broadcast CD :-)
One of my Creative Writing classmates remarked that, for him, Broadcast picked up where Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms left off.
Broadcast kicks off with the killer "Any Colour," whose throbbing bassline has become an audiophile acid test. My old audio pal Chris reminds us not to forget the drums, either [Chris plays drums]. And, with honest audio products, the guitars should remain separate from other images, and, in their own way, soar.
And no, 30 years later, we do not know what a Cutting Crew is. Hopefully, it's something more than a bunch of guys trimming trees.
