40 years. Can you believe it has been 40 years, since the late Andrew Gold had a very minor "hit," with the lite rock beaut, "Lonely Boy?"
I had just turned 5, and "Lonely Boy" was one of the first non-children's songs I had heard. But then I went to school, which, at least initially, cut down on the amount of time I had to listen to music. Since I would only hear this song on San Francisco's KOIT, I had no idea what Andrew Gold looked like, or what his career was like. Turns out, since he was from SoCal, and played a wide variety of instruments, he was an in-demand session player, songwriter, and producer. He worked with a who's who of soft rock.
The song is actually about a young boy, who, after the birth of his baby sister, no longer gets as much attention from his parents. But hey, free from oversight, the boy had the time to become a talented musician :-)
After the late-70s, I basically did not hear "Lonely Boy" again. During my senior year of college, 1992-93, our Adcom GTP-400 pulled in a Central CA Oldies station. I vaguely recall it playing "Lonely Boy" twice.
Well, thanks to the internet, we don't have to wait for or rely on radio stations. When "Lonely Boy" is reproduced cleanly, I'm back at my elementary school, on Pacific Heights. The afternoons were beautiful and sunny, and you could sense, smell, or breathe in the faint sea breeze, making its way first from the Bay, later from the west. 40 years...
