Jennifer Warnes, "First We Take Manhattan"

In early 1987, a few of my friends made a pit stop at my house, before heading out to play ball. The TV was on, in the background. I guess it was tuned to VH1. While I was getting snacks and drinks, Andy, who was in my homeroom, remarked, "Hey, is that Stevie Ray Vaughn?"

Yes indeed, SRV was in the video for Jennifer "Up Where We Belong" Warnes' cover of "First We Take Manhattan."

We just looked at each other, and understood that, on account of the guitar and drums, this may have been the only time Warnes would be asked to rock. Yeah, but when we listened more carefully, Ms. Warnes turned in a mature, in-control performance, deferring to the studio musicians to rock out. Nevertheless, what an enjoyable ditty, an example of why a faction of my audiophile circle states that 1987 was pop music's most diverse.

For the rest of my school, the end of 1987 would put Warnes over the top, when she and Righteous Brother Bill Medley did the duet, "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life."
