RE: 98 dB is loud?

I guess it depends if you are talking average or peak volume and what sort of weighting is involved int he measurement. I doubt that 98 db is loud for a rock concert, but it could still be umpeasant (and the peaks would probably be much higher.) This is why I always carry ear plugs with me.

For a New Orleans specific referent, at the Jazz Fest jazz tent, the level is not supposed to go over 102 db (again, I don't know exactly what is being measured) in the back of the tent at the sound booth. Back in 2008, one of the groups on my music label was performing, and I got the recording engineer to mix the sound for them (because the house guys are deaf and dumb in in my opinion.) Unfortunately, as soon as the band hit so did a massive thunderstorm. The ambient noise (from the rain and the overcrowded audience mostly in the tent to escape the storm and not listen) measured 98 db; there as literally no space for the music to be heard, and it was annoyingly loud because it was constant!
