Growing up with my dad's upper mid-fi stereo (Thorens TT and NAD receiver) the old Blue Notes grabbed my attention like nothing else. It may be that on a less revealing system the forward presentation of horns and drums and the distintively rich tenor sax sound made the records more involving and memorable than more "accurately" recorded ones. I get the same effect on my friends' more down to earth systems. On a contemporary ultra resolution system the same elements can sound unnatural and excessive. But as a follow-up post at Bluenote.com said, this revisionist view of RVG's work is unfair and unpractical. Criticizing his remasters and new recordings is, however, more legitimate, if not more useful.
