The extant LPs of Gould's 1981 Goldbergs were cut from edited PCM F1 video tapes. I believe CBS had a read-ahead groove spacing system called discComputer. My LP of that is somewhere.I have to sigh or grit my teeth when persons opine about the analog backup being evidence of "not trusting" digital.
For commercial classical recording, best engineering practice since the mid 1960s has been to back up the main archival medium, period. If only for having copies for pre-editing. At the time, 15 ips analog was standard and, believe it or not, backup was usually cassettes. LPs were at times cut from cassettes in those days...
Digital recorders then being rare, they backed up on analog. They had a room full of analog gear in that facility. End of story. There was no sniper on the Grassy Knoll.
Resignedly,
John
