Clarification

Music is as close to a direct link to another's conciousness (or spirit or soul) as we have. But even there, we only have our own personal reaction, our own personal understanding. Can we really understand precisely what the composer was feeling? No, we can only have direct experience of our own.

Of course OTOH, I learned that 2x2 is 4 from others - not exactly knowledge about myself :-)

Problem with most "deep" discussions like this is you end up in the same quandry as dostoevsky's underground man - "My God, but what do I care about the laws of nature and arithmetic if for some reason these laws and two times two is four are not to my liking? To be sure, I won't break through such a wall with my forehead if I really have not got strength enough to do it, but neither will I be reconciled with it simply because I have a stone wall here and have not got strength enough"

The real question is, "Does all truth flow from the self, or is the self simply a receptacle of truth?"

Of course, the very act of attempting to communicate with another implies a common reality, else words would be meaningless and we would simply be talking to ourselves without the possiblity of anyone understanding what we are trying to communicate. . .
