I have to disagree. Although I really enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) Zanders Mahler 9, I think his fifth is bad. I remember turning on the radio one day and being pleasantly surpised to hear that they were playing Mahler's fifth, on of my favourite symphonies. After a few minutes, though, I became less enthusiastic. Although the playing was fine, the incredible climaxes of the first movement sounded slack and clumsy; the faintly jewish melodies sounded pretty exaggerated, making the whole thing seem contrived; and the overall impression was of a conductor trying too hard. When the performance was finished the announcer voiced exactly the same set of criticisms.Because I really like Zander, I felt pretty bad about this, but I really don't like that recording. I haven't heard his sixth yet, but I understand it's the subject of some division. As I said, I like his ninth a lot, even though the recording dynamics make it difficult to set the volume control. Sorry.
Incidentally, I was supposed to hear Jarvi conduct M9 a while back but his last minute cancellation forced the orchestra to call in Zander. It was a fantastic performance.
