It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: "Papa" Haydn and Kid Gloves

Well, I agree with you in part. Harnoncourt really does wonders with Haydn - I believe that Haydn music is where he does best! Funny, when I read your message I had just listened and compared 3 recordings of the great Schopfungsmesse (Creation mass)Hob XXII-13: Marriner with Hendricks and Staatskapelle Dresden, Gardiner with his usual team (Monteverdi ch., English Baroque sol.) and Harnoncourt with Concentus M. Wien and Arnold Schoenberg choir. Differences are astounding!!

Marriner has a solemn , classical, heavy but dynamic approach, slow but strongly rythmic tempos, large orchestra, large choir. Great reading, but probably "not correct" nowadays. My 1st recommendation anyhow.

Harnoncourt is just like you say: WOW! Music is explosive, drums loud and clear, small period orchestra is ... SENSUAL, who would say Haydn can be sensual? just listen to the opening bars of the Kyrie! Those crescendos are a caress to soul and body! Haydn really lives a 2nd life with Harnoncourt. Not for everyone's taste, though....

Finally Gardiner is just what you complain about, SE! Boring, unexpressive, "preety and genteel" but dry and dead. The usual Haydn we often listen and don't care of. A failure.

Please, do have this Mass in your CD shelves. It's a masterpiece to side with Bach or Mozart best masses.
