I just got about a dozen *local* releases (sold only to the Cleveland market) of Cleveland Orchestra performances under mostly George Szell and Lorin Maazel. All on vinyl. (The last of the LP releases, before CD took over.) After setting up and tweaking the new Schroeder tonearm, I slapped on Bernstein's Candide Overture conducted by Lorin Maazel ("The Sounds of America")... Not the greatest recording in the world... But the sound of that orchestra!! Put me in Music Heaven... (You can hear that great Cleveland Orchestra sound through a mediocre LP recording, but it often gets mangled through "good" CD recordings. I haven't heard the Fiedler Candide in a long time, with mostly Koussevitzky's BSO players, which is also a fabulous performance.)"The Cleveland Orchestra Live" (from Blossom Music Center) has hair raising performances of the final movement of Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony with George Szell and the final movement of Tchaikovky's 5th Symphony with Riccardo Chailly. (**Much** better-played than the famous Szell recording, where the Cleveland Orchestra had yet to reach its virtuosic pinnacle. The interpretation is markedly similar to Szell as well.) This LP shows up on eBay quite often.
(Will comment on the Schroeder arm on Vinyl Asylum in a few weeks. This is something special in its own right.)
