most of these older string instruments 'sought after' by modern players are not in original condition but modified to the max for loudness.Eg the primacy of Strad's is not because they were necessarily better than a Guarnerius or a Del Jesu, or a Stainer for god's sake, way back then, but because they responded - to the mods for loud - so well.
Many other sweeter instruments were ruined by the same mods, which reduced their value to boot and reduced the numbers of vailable originals as well GRRRR! down with loud I say.
read it up guys.
we had this antiques show here once called 'for love or money' and the presenter - one of Auntie's stuffed arty talking heads - wittered on about how maybe the Bach's had had Strad's - to a lass who had brought 'hers' in (a loan from a foundation and modified to the max anyway!).
well back then the heirarchy, in North Germany at least, was Stainer way ahead, then the Italians (not just Cremona) and Strad a good bit down that list to boot. JSB owned two Stainer stringed instruments.
