They may not be underappreciated, but Pete Townsend and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) are tops among rhythm players.The second guitarists in AC/DC, Guns and Roses and Pearl Jam are also good. I would also tip my hat to players in some of the newer hard rock bands like Creed (although I'm not fond of their music).
I would also mention Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page as underrated rhythm plyers, if only because their rhythm playing gets overshadowed by their lead playing.
