This is an excellent assessment of how the mass market views the blues. When people hear that I love the blues, they invariably assume that I'm a huge Clapton fan. I was during his Mayall days! EC's sort of recent foray into blues (From the Cradle) sounded more like stadium rock. A double timed fuzz laden solo on a slow blues? Sheesh! And when people hear I'm a jazz fan, they assume I own a bunch of Kenny G and Eric Marienthal records (not a one!). Kenny G and Coltrane both play a soprano saxophone and there the similarity ends.Agree with Muddy, Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, etc and I would add Son House and Sleepy John Estes. Neither were great technically on the guitar but those voices! Son could flat out bellow!!!! Sleepy John makes you alternate between crying and chuckling. Keb Mo is an ok listen but I cringe when people refer to him as a blues artist. "Pale blues pop" says it better than I ever could.
