Based on what you've told us, I'd recommend some John Pizzarelli. Very high level of musicianship with either his trio or with a larger ensemble, consistantly teriffic recording quality. He's more adept on guitar than acoustic alchemy - his improvisational skills are much more evolved - yet he's very melodic. If you like those two by Diana Krall, you'll find Pizarelli's arrangements similiarly swinging and melodic. His voice is pleasant, too. It's real jazz though - Pizzarelli improvises like mad, both with lead runs, rhythm chords, and often scatting his vocals along with the guitar. His usual triomates are both fantastic musicians - Martin Pizzarelli on acoustic bass and Ray Kennedy on piano. The trio's sound is warm and acoustic, swings like crazy and is highly interactive between the instruments. He's got many, many worthwhile CDs, but some of my favorites are:Dear Mr. Cole
P.S. Mr. Cole
Naturally
Let There Be LoveEspecially if you like DK's "All For You", her Nat King Cole tribute - you'll enjoy Pizzarellis's two Cole CDs. In the trio format, the musicianship is a step up from Diana Krall and IMO a big step up from Acoustic Alchemy. I'm an admirer of some of Harry Connnick's works - the jazzier side of him when he avoids the easy listening cliches. I think if you like his jazz piano and vocals style, you'd have to like Pizarelli who, in addition to his guitar, relies a lot on piano solos and interaction between the piano and guitar.
For more detailed info on his albums, go to allmusic.com and type his name in the search field to read up on him.
Good luck, and if you check him out, let me know what you think. I'm a huge Pizarelli fan, and will be hearing him live next month - even a nicer treat than hearing his CDs.
Mike
