I've come to the same conclusions as you have. The U.S. RVG series is a bit uneven in sound quality (especially the treble, where the cymbals sometimes seem to lash out at me). I generally prefer the smoother sound of the Japanese RVG discs in most cases to both the domestic RVG and the McMaster Connoisseur discs, although there are exceptions like a few of the Grant Green titles. It would be interesting to know the full story as to why the U.S. and Japanese RVG discs often times sound so different. From what I understand the mixes on the Japanese series are completely different than those for the U.S. releases due to contractual reasons, but are the sonic differences due to different mixing/mastering equipment, a different approach by RVG for the different markets, better CD mastering & production standards in Japan, etc.? I think I vaguely remember something from the BN BBS that RVG was simply acting on the preferences of his respective employer for each edition.
