I can see this album appealing to fans of dance music who aren't familiar with the originals, but I think this one would make even the most open-minded jazz fans sick. I found it very disturbing to hear great, complete, organic performances chopped up into bits and used as background for dance beats. Listening to it I felt like really they could have been sampling anything--a voice over from a car commercial or something--in this context the originals lost all meaning. I particularly hated what they did with Carmen Mcrae's version of "How long has this been going on?" (just sampled that one phrase, over and over).Of course I am not really a fan of the trip-hop scene, and maybe this kind of project will bring more people to jazz, although I doubt it. I do like some artists who incorporate elements of trip-hop into their music (Beth Orton, Bebel Gilberto), but trip-hop itself leaves me cold (too repetitive/mechanical). This one just made me ill though.
Sorry for the rant.
